Question:

After hernia surgery, how long until I am recovered?

Answer:

For a routine hernia repair you will be back to unrestricted activity in one month. You will be back to light duty work, not lifting more than 20 Lbs, in one week. Healing actually continues for one year. Most of this time healing is the remodeling phase of healing during which scar softens and fades. Most of the strength in the healed tissue occurs in the first 4 weeks. Some patients I may ask to take it easy for 6 weeks. There typically is very little benefit to restricting activity beyond six weeks. This is based on the tradition that I was trained in and 31 years of experience.
