How do I manage an inguinal hernia before surgery?

If you are forced to live with a hernia for some time before you have surgery there are some things you can do to help yourself. First, avoid any activity that you see obviously aggravates your hernia. This generally includes heavy lifting and any exertion which causes you to hold your breath. Second, if you are over weight, lose weight. Third, be aware of the symptoms of an emergency. If you develop severe pain or vomiting lasting more than two hours you must go to the emergency room. A truss may make you comfortable enough to work but it does not prevent hernia complications.
