Should everyone have hernia surgery?

Yes, everyone with a hernia should have it fixed. There are three exceptions to this rule. 1) children under the age of 4 years with an umbilical hernia usually are not operated because many of these hernias will heal. After the age of 4 umbilical hernias do not heal. 2) Hiatal hernias usually are successfully treated medically and usually do not require surgery. 3) There maybe medical conditions that preclude the surgery because of saftey. This one requires judgement and careful consideration. Hernias are potentially life threatening so it is worth some risk to repair them.
