Jaundice

Jaundice is a condition where the eyes and skin of a patient turns bright yellow. The urine may become dark brown. In extreme cases the patient may develop intense itching (urticaria) which is uncontrollable.

Jaundice is caused by the back up of bilirubin, a component of bile, into the blood circulation. Normally the liver excretes bile into the intestine. If the bile ducts connecting the liver to the intestine are blocked by a stone or a cancer jaundice will develop.
