Diabetes is not a risk factor for hernias. Uncontrolled diabetes does however increase the risk of all surgery. Patients who have very high blood sugar may have their surgery postponed until their blood sugar is controlled. Blood sugar greater than 140 are associated with an increased risk of wound infection. We ask that diabetic patients who test and manage their blood sugar at home do everything they can to keep their blood sugar below 140 the day before surgery and for one week after. The benefit of this was first recognized in cardiac surgery but it applies to all surgery.
