Antibiotic prophylaxis in hernia surgery.

Antibiotics after hernia surgery?

Antibiotics are given at the time of hernia surgery in the operating room. Antibiotics given before or after hernia surgery provides no benefit and only increases the likelihood of an adverse reaction to the antibiotic. We typically use a first generation cephlosporin, Ancef. This antibiotic is effective and has a very good safety profile. Since we only give one dose we do not wipe out the normal flora in the colon.
