At what age can you develop an umbilical hernia?
You can be born with an umbilical hernia. Umbilical hernias are very common in children. They are the result of the umbilical cord leaving behind a hole in abdominal wall after it drys out and dissappears. This hole results in a hernia which usually heals. This is the one exception to the rule that hernias never heal by themselves. In children, in fact, we do not repair umbilical hernias before the age of 4 years because most of these early umbilical hernias will heal themselves. In adults they never heal by themselves and we always recommend repair.
