Yes. I have seen cases where the mesh was tolerated well for ten years and then started causing severe pain. The mesh does not have to slip to cause pain. Patients who have mesh have chronic inflammation around the mesh induced by the mesh. This can be asymptomatic for decades then all of a sudden cause pain. Nobody knows why it happens after so many years.
Recently we have found evidence that mesh degrades in the human body over time. By electron microscopy it looks something like tree bark. This is something that manufacturers have denied for decades. Degradation could explain why some patients tolerate mesh for years then develop crippling mesh pain. But it is not likely the explaination for everybody.
