In 2011 there were 1884 preventable deaths in the USA from hernias. The risk of death goes up significantly with age although no one is immune. The prevalence of hernias is 47% of the population by the age of 75. One million hernia repair operations are preformed in the USA each year. Patients have a lot of reasons for not getting their hernia repaired but there are only rare medical reasons for not getting a hernia repaired. More women than men die from a hernia even though hernias are much more common in men by 10 to one.
