Can you perform bilateral inguinal hernia surgery?
Yes, bilateral inguinal hernia surgery can be performed safely and effectively. We do this routinely now. Years ago most surgeons recommend staged repairs, that is, doing them one at a time seperated by three or more months. In my own practice I have found no difference in rates of complications. There are good reasons to do bilateral versus staged repairs. The first is that if you do two hernia repairs at the same time the recovery time is only one month. If you do them seperately the recovery time is twice as long. Also, if you are uninsured and paying for the surgery yourself, it is much more economical to do two at the same time.
