Hernias, fascia and exercise

Does strengthening abdominal wall muscles help a hernia or prevent a hernia?

No! The abdominal wall gets its integrety from two types of tissue - fascia and muscle. Abdominal wall muscle supports the torso but it does not hold the intestines in. Fascia holds the intestines in. You can strengthen muscle with exercise but you cannot strenghten fascia with exercise. You can only make fascia weaker with exercise. A hernia is an injury, a tear, in the fascia that allows the intestines to come out.We repair a hernia by repairing the injury to the fascia.
