Open heart surgery can cause a hernia

Have you ever heard of hernia coming out after open heart surgery?

Yes. These are fairly common hernias. The incision that is created to get to the heart is called a median sternotomy. A median sternotomy opens the chest by splitting the breast bone right down the middle. This incision goes partly into the abdomen just below the breast bone and this is were hernias occur. Hernias can also occur at the insertion site of temporary drains that are placed during open heart surgery. All of these hernias should be repaired.
