A hernia is a tear in the investing fascia of the abdominal wall which allows abdominal viscera such as intestines to protrude out of the abdomen. The principle danger is that intestine outside of the abdomen can become strangulated in the neck of the hernia resulting in a bowel obstruction or worse, intestinal gangrene. Hernias will not heal by themselves and must be surgically repaired. Surgery is the only safe and effective treatment for hernias.
