Catheter and Hernia Surgery

Is urinary retention a common side effect of hernia surgery?

No. Not in patients who do not have symptoms of prostate problems such as slow stream, slow to start stream, waking at night to void. Patients who have such symptoms can still have their hernia repaired but might need a foley catheter after surgery. We do not put a catheter in before surgery. We only put a catheter in if a patient cannot void 12 hours after surgery.
