Should I take an antibiotic before hernia surgery?

You will receive antibiotics 30 minutes before your hernia surgery. It turns out that the only antibiotics that helps is what is in your blood during the surgery. So taking antibiotics long before surgery or after surgery does not decrease rate of infection but does increase the chance that you will have a complication related to the antibiotics. Our routine is to give a single dose of a first generation cephalosporin intravenous just 30 minutes prior to surgery.
