ASIA Syndrome Induced by Hernia Mesh

Autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvant

Fatigue by ASIA

ASIA syndrome has been recognized for many years in association with silicone breast implants. It is now recognized as being caused by polypropylene hernia mesh. Patients with hernia mesh pain also commonly have other symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, irritable bowel and many others. See table below. These are symptoms of ASIA syndrome. Mesh removal causes improvement of these symptoms in 50% to 70% of patients.

I have been listening to hernia mesh patients complain of these symptoms and problems for 25 years. These symptoms are routinely dismissed by  all doctors. An excellent article just recently published, December 2018, gives the criterion for diagnosing ASIA syndrome, lists the symptoms, explains biologically how it happens, gives recommendations for treatment(removal of the inciting device) and indicts polypropylene mesh as one of the causes.
