Mesh Free Hernia Surgery and Hernia Mesh Removal
A Difficult Cause

Kevin C. Petersen, M.D.

Any surgeon can safely remove mesh with many good results and rare complications. But these surgeons pit themselves against the consensus and the standard of care which challenges understanding and sense of security.

Hernia mesh surgery has been designated as the standard of care by our important, adhoritative hernia surgery societies. There is good reason for this but it has been erroneously applied as an absolute. There are many hernia surgeons who get excellent results without resorting to mesh. But not honoring the standard of care creates exposure to medical malpractice liability, professional criticism, state medical board scrutiny and patient confusion. These surgeons are not protected by their colleagues and must endure professional criticism and ad-hominem attach's by disappointed patients.

My hat is off for all surgeons who can stand up for these difficult worthy causes.
